new topographics: photographs of a man-altered landscape

New Topographics 1new topographics 3

Not much has changed since 1975 when New Topographics first opened at the George Eastman House. The state of the world resembled our current predicament — a recession, fuel shortages, and a looming environmental crisis. The exhibition is like a time capsule, looking back on untouched and developing landscapes that consumed the imaginations of photographers who found solace in the linearity of tract homes, trailers, seedy motels, and the artificial shadow cast by palm trees in the California sun. The romantic vision of nature is in question as the photographs contemplate the remaining natural world.
